I apologize if this question may seem trivial, but I'm quite perplexed as to what qualifies as an onomatopoeia. Does it simply include written sounds, or does it also include the description of sounds? Here is the quote for reference:
"From somewhere near by came scuffling, kicking sounds, sounds of shoes and flesh scraping dirt and roots."

I would say in your example, that "scuffling" and "scraping" were onomatopoeic because they have sounds (when spoken) that are reminiscent of the sounds they are describing. Words that fit the definition are those which, when said, force you to actually imitate what you are describing. These words still count as onomatopoeic, even when they are written and the "sound" only occurs in the reader's imagination.

Onomatopoeia means the word itself sounds like what it is describing. Very few words fit this criteria. A good example would be buzz. Say buzz. That tingly 'Z' sound at the end is the sound of a bee. Another would be tsk-tsk, as in, "She tsk-tsked at me." The word itself mimics the sound a person makes when they tsk-tsk at you. If you said scuffling to a toddler, they wouldn't know what you meant. But if you said, moo, meow, or buzz they would get it. That's onomatopoeia.
